Although beam and Aircrete block construction offers many advantages
over other flooring systems, nowhere are its benefits more apparent than when used on uneven
ground, or on sloping or difficult-to-access site such as a brownfield location.
Unlike a traditional concrete slab construction a beam and Aircrete block floor does not require
a hardcore base. It can also be easily constructed over relatively uneven gound without the need
to first seal the ground with a concrete oversite. Because this system allows the ground floor to
be supported directly off the wall, the problems which can be caused by clay settlement and
insufficiently compacted hardcore are also eliminated, as is the often difficult task of co-ordinating
a concrete pour.
The Aircrete blocks can be brought onto site in small quantities where access is difficult (again
unlike concrete in-situ slabs) and this adds to the tremendous flexibility and ease of working
which the blocks offer. They are lightweight - as much as 60% less than comparable materials -
which makes them easy to handle, and contributes towards significantly reduced construction times.
This is further enhanced by the facility to cut and shape the blocks with the ordinary hand tools
found on any site.
The thermal insulation properties of Aircrete blocks bring another particular benefit to beam and
blocks floor construction, as does their compatibility with a wide range of commonly used floor
finishes. They are offered in a wide range of sizes by a number of different manufacturers, which
ensures both ease of availability and continuity of supply.
